  23.  akPNG.datatype is a new PNG datatype, which is based on the
  24.  latest PNG sources (zlib V1.0.4, libpng 1.0 beta 6 - version 0.96).

  26.  So it does support 8 Bit color mapped files (colorspace expanded to
  27.  8 bit per component always) and True color files (24/48 Bit, alpha
  28.  channel ignored, 48 Bit 16:16:16 cut down to 24 Bit 8:8:8).
